The Baby Boomer generation has been responsible for many trends over the decades, including a current one that may lead to a transformation in how older Americans perceive marriage. The Boomers, who began turning 50 in 1996, divorced at a higher rate earlier in their lives than the Greatest Generation, and that same trend has held true in their later years.

The divorce rate for Americans over age 50 has doubled since 1990. While the actual number is only 10 out of every 1,000 married individuals over 50, which is less than half the divorce rate for those under 50, the trend is significant.

Why Older Couples Divorce

Marriage experts believe there are numerous reasons why older Americans are getting divorced more than ever before. One is because fewer people who have been married for extended periods of time believe they must live out their final years together simply because they have been a couple for so long. Some have endured a deteriorating situation for decades and eventually cannot do it anymore.

One man, who left his wife of more than 30 years for a co-worker, said, “We never did connect that well emotionally or intellectually, and especially after the children were grown, I dreaded coming home. My getting involved with someone else was a symptom, not the cause, of my marriage falling apart.”

Others are willing to take a risk in starting a new life, while they previously stayed with their spouse because of their children or the fear of possible financial problems in a divorce. Some couples also split due to money issues and stress that stem from midlife unemployment or occupational instability.

Also, with the prevalence of social media and online dating, older adults are no longer limited in their attempt to find a new significant other. This has alleviated worries about being alone for the rest of their lives, so that is not as much of a deciding factor as with generations past.
